Art281 Juried Art Show & Sale

The San Antonio Glass Art Guild (SAGAG) is putting out a call to artists for the third annual Art281 Art Show & Sale being held Saturday, October 8, from 10 - 6 at My Place Bar & Grille. Artwork must be handmade, high quality pieces.

“We have a number of excellent glass artists who have already juried in, but we would like to expand our reach and showcase more of the many talented painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, and fiber artists in our region. We encourage artists of all disciplines to apply,” says Nicole Lozano, President of SAGAG. “We also encourage participation by dance and musical groups, to showcase their talents. Other arts organizations are welcome to host informational booths for their groups.”

Art281 is known as a venue for high-quality, handcrafted art. Held rain or shine on the grounds of My Place Bar & Grille in Bulverde, Texas, Art281 draws artists and patrons from throughout the Hill Country region and South Texas. Information and applications are available at www.art281.com.

A Frank Conversation

I get questions from time to time about how we came up with the items on our menu. One of the most frequently asked questions is about our Frankburger and Chili Frank. People want to know why we do ours the way we do. Frankly, it all started 36 years ago.

In March of 1974, my family opened an ice cream store on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. We served the usual cones, shakes, malts, sundaes and my favorite the banana split. My Dad wanted to do just a little more. He decided we would serve hot dogs, so that you could get lunch and desert all at the same place. Back in 1974 we didn't have the 100's of different hot dogs that are available today. The standard was the scrawny little hot dog that you boiled in water and served. But my dad found the biggest hot dog my young eyes had ever seen. It came from Oscar Meyer (who didn't sing that song as a kid) and was a quarter pound all beef dog. It was quite simply the best hot dog I had ever had. This was my first venture into cooking for the public.

Fast forward 16 years and I'm a young kitchen manager in Austin, Texas. Have just developed a chili that is both great in a bowl by itself or on a sandwich, I thought it would be great on a hot dog. Now we all know that hot dogs and hot dog buns come packed in different amount in each package. So you are always left with either more hot dogs or more buns then necessary. That's a wast and in the restaurant business, just like at home nobody wants to waste food. While cooking one day I thought, why not put the chili dog on a bun just like a burger? It seemed to me like that would make sense and be easier and less mess to eat. We tried it out and lo and behold it was a success.

Fast forward 16 years again (ironic, isn't it) and we were putting together the menu for My Place. We wanted to bring the best of all my experience while creating a menu that reflected our tastes. The rule was if we didn't want to eat it, we would not serve it. I remembered serving the chili dog on the bun and thought about the best hot dog I ever ate. After a little research I found that Oscar Meyer quarter pound all beef hot dog and the Frankburger became a permanent part of the My Place menu.

We heard July was National Hot Dog month. Here at My Place Bar & Grille we are happy to celebrate a good hot dog any and every day. Stop by and try our Frankbuger, an all beef Frank and a Half Served on a Sour Dough Bun with mustard and Sauteed Onions. Oscar Meyer, we salute you.

San Antonio native Tish Hinojosa now calls Hamburg, Germany, home, but she has not forgotten her roots. Hinojosa is in Texas for a few days and will give a free show 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the new My Place Bar and Grille, 29094 U.S. 281 N. in Bulverde, the old Ferdie's site. Multi-instrumentalist Troy Wells will work with her.

Hinojosa's latest CD is Our Little Planet. The disc is a return to the music Hinojosa wrote and recorded in the '80s: country music marked by smart words and some twang. In a June interview, Hinojosa said the disc was inspired, in part, by nostalgia and a bit of homesickness. The songs aren't complicated, but they feature plenty of harmony vocals and Texas country soul.

Fresh from working a country music festival in Denmark, Hinojosa is doing three shows in her home state before returning to Germany. The San Antonio native has a new CD, "Our Little Planet," that features the kind of country music the singing songwriter did back in the '80s. For her live shows, you can count on Tish to offer up varied selections from her considerable catalog. At My Place she'll be accompanied by Troy Wells. My Place, the old Ferdie's in Bulverde, is owned and operated by David Lozano, who managed the now long-gone Chuy's on Broadway when the place was cool music central on hot summertime Thursday evenings.

I have to tell you this was one of the faster photo shoots I have done. The product just didn't last long enough for me to take much more than three photos. I know, It's a tough job but someone has got to do it. Maybe next time David will let me report on the Apple Pie. I want you to know I take these things seriously and feel it necessary to conduct the utmost research on the topics I report on. With that in mind, I think I'll go refill my Lemonade. My job is never done.

A BIG thanks to Hot Sauce Technologies

After two months of dutiful service day in and day out we retired our manual cash register in exchange for an automated Point of Sale system supplied by Hot Sauce Technologies. This is one of the many improvements we are making to increase our efficiency as we continue to expand. This also means we can move the old register and all that paperwork to make room for what will become the bar once a liquor license is received.

Two Out of Three Isn't Bad

If you have been by My Place and talked to David or I you probably were asked for your feedback. After such a request in January, one table left us these suggestions.

David and I talked about these ideas along with those we received verbally from many of you, like the one for Thousand Island dressing. Whether you see a quick change or no change at all, you should know your ideas are valued. In this case we have been able to accommodate two out of the three requests.
1) Thousand Island dressing has been added to our selection which includes Ranch, Blue Cheese, Honey-Mustard, Italian and Caesar.
2) We have added some pretty tasty Fried Shrimp served with Cocktail Sauce to our list of entrees.

Homemade Honey Mustard Dressing

Okay, so there is a little more to it then just Honey and Mustard but not much. You'll be able to taste the goodness of these two key ingredients in our homemade Honey Mustard dressing. Great on a side salad yes, but why limit yourself. Try it as a dip for our crispy chicken tenders instead of gravy for a sweet alternative.

Staking Out Steak

Since day one, when we started contemplating the menu, we always knew we would have a good juicy Angus Steak (or 2 or 3). We wanted to include items we would eat, items we thought you would enjoy, items we knew we could do well. Steaks encompass all these things. So it was a surprise to us when January 1st rolled around and we opened without a single steak on the menu. We were on a "Steak Out", looking for the right cut of meat at the right price. Leave it to David to find a way to bring flavorful Handcut Strip and Ribeye Steaks to the menu at only $15.99. It's a quality product at a price you can enjoy, served with a side salad and your choice of vegetable.

The Sweet Sounds of Music

You told us you wanted it. We told you it was on the way. So I am very happy to say that the sweet smooth sound of music has arrived at My Place. Satellite Radio was delivered Thursday and installed Friday in plenty of time for our dinner guests to enjoy. What a difference a little background music can make when your gathered around the table with good friends and great food.

When you start with fresh quality ingredients it doesn't take a lot to make great tasting food. For example start with fresh Atlantic Salmon, grille with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of pepper, add to that a side of sauteed vegetables and you have a meal that's both delicious and nutritious. This is the way we like to cook at My Place using quality ingredients, cooked to order and served straight from the grille.

Our initial bear bones menu didn't have a specific section for kids. Well that's about to change. By popular demand we added the following items, all kid tested and approved. For just $4.99 the following meals are all served with fries and a drink.

Luv Me Tenders - Chicken Tenders Hand Breaded and Fried Golden

Kiddy Catfish - Catfish Hand Breaded and Fried

Grilled Cheese - Grilled Sour Dough Bread with American Cheese

Other menu items popular with those big and small include the Frankburger an all beef frank and a half served on a sour dough bun with mustard and sautéed onions, and The Classic Burger topped with American cheese.

So much has happened since December 15th but I'll make this short and jump straight to the point. My Place Bar & Grill is Now Open. On the Afternoon of January 1st we flipped the closed sign to open and began serving. You can check out our current menu on our website at http://www.myplacetx.com/.

We are very excited to say that after many months of planning and waiting, we are now in the final stages of preparation to open My Place, a local restaurant. Early next week the contractors will be finishing the remaining portions of the renovation, the electrician will change out the lighting and only days later our doors will open for business. Already we are excited by the interest people have shared when stopping to see if we are open or asking about event space in the Party House.

We have enjoyed the relationships we developed with our vendors and contractors. But we are ready to opening our doors to the public and begin developing those relationships with others in our community. Keep your eyes on us as you drive up/down Highway 281, we may be open before you know it.
